How Does the Morse Code Audio Generator & WPM Calculator Work?

Morse code is an acoustic and optical communication system devised by Samuel Morse in the 1830s. Every alphabet letter, Arabic numeral, and punctuation mark is converted into sequences of short signals (called dits, rendered as dots .) and long signals (called dahs, rendered as dashes -).

While basic online tools merely output static punctuation strings, our Morse Code Audio Generator utilizes the browser's hardware-accelerated Web Audio API to synthesize real-time sinusoidal oscillator tones. It adheres strictly to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-R M.1677) timing standard.

The Paris Standard: Calculating Morse Code WPM

How fast is 20 WPM? Because different words contain different numbers of dots and dashes (for example, "E" is 1 unit while "Q" is 9 units), transmission speed cannot be measured by arbitrary words. The international telegraph community established the standard benchmark word: PARIS.

Component Morse Representation Unit Duration Count
Letter P. - - .1 + 1 + 3 + 1 + 3 + 1 + 1 = 11 units
Letter A. -1 + 1 + 3 = 5 units
Letter R. - .1 + 1 + 3 + 1 + 1 = 7 units
Letter I. .1 + 1 + 1 = 3 units
Letter S. . .1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 5 units
Inter-letter SpacesBetween P, A, R, I, S4 spaces × 3 units = 12 units

Total Word PARISStandard BenchmarkExactly 50 Units

From this standard, the exact formula for unit duration (one Dit) in seconds is:

Unit Duration (t) = 1.2 / WPM

At 20 WPM, one dit lasts exactly 1.2 / 20 = 0.06 seconds (60 milliseconds). A dah lasts 3 dits (180ms).
